DAILY COURIER - In a heartfelt appeal, the Most Rev. Dr. David O. C. Onuoha, President of the Christian Council of Nigeria, has urged Nigerians to work diligently to preserve the nation's unity and integrity. Addressing the current socio-economic and security challenges, Archbishop Onuoha emphasized the need for collective efforts to foster peace and stability.
He highlighted the prevailing tensions in the country, noting that during times of economic hardship and escalating insecurity, it is imperative for leaders at all levels to prioritize the welfare of citizens. He cautioned against actions that could exacerbate unease and confusion, stating that impunity often serves as a precursor to anarchy.
Archbishop Onuoha called upon members of the judiciary to ensure that their judgments and rulings promote order and do not contribute to societal confusion. He underscored the importance of accountability, urging that all individuals, regardless of status, be held to the same standards under the law.
Addressing legislators, he reminded them of their duty to represent the interests of the Nigerian people faithfully. He described any action that does not serve constituents' manifest interests as a betrayal of trust and a disservice to future generations.
The Archbishop also expressed concern over the increasing loss of innocent lives, including those of security personnel, due to activities by various groups. He called for immediate and concerted efforts to halt the actions of these agents of destruction, emphasizing that such endeavors can only succeed in an atmosphere of mutual love, trust, and unity of purpose.
"Every effort should be made to end the wanton waste and destruction of innocent lives of citizens, including the security personnel, which is becoming a regular occurrence in our society" the statement reads in part.
He reminded Nigerians that the nation possesses ample resources to ensure the happiness and comfort of all citizens. By genuinely loving one's neighbor, ensuring equity and fairness in all actions and policies, and fostering brotherhood despite tribal and linguistic differences, the country can achieve greater harmony and progress.
"Nigeria is big and blessed enough to make every citizen happy and comfortable. If we can genuinely love our neighbour as we love ourselves and ensure that equity and fairness guide all our actions, decisions and policies, as well as endeavour to stand in brotherhood despite our differences in tribe and tongue, it will do us a lot of good"
In light of the ongoing Lent and Ramadan fasts, Archbishop Onuoha called for genuine penitence and a collective resolve to build a nation where justice prevails, invoking the biblical exhortation: "Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream" (Amos 5:24).
Archbishop Onuoha's advocacy underscores the critical need for collective action in addressing Nigeria's challenges, emphasizing that unity, justice, and mutual respect are foundational to the nation's stability and growth.
