"On World Press Freedom Day, we celebrate journalists around the world, especially those who bravely pursue investigative reporting to improve the lives of women and girls.
Here are some key statistics highlighting the importance of their work:
1. 1 in 3 women will experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime (UN Women).
2. 32 million girls are out of school due to child marriage, early pregnancy, and lack of access (UNESCO).
"Investigative journalists expose these injustices and hold powerful actors accountable" the statement reads in part.
Among the invaluable contributions of investigative journalists to women and girls advocacy, the statement further disclosed include: "Policy reforms; Increased awareness: Shining a light on issues like gender-based violence or child exploitation can spark public outrage and inspire action.
Empowerment for women and girls: Investigative reports can give voice to victims, leading to support networks and improved access to resources."
A free press among others will hold governments and institutions accountable, fostering transparency and good governance. Secondly, an independent journalism provides citizens with the information they need to make informed decisions. And investigative journalism can expose injustices and spark social movements for positive change.
"World press freedom is essential for a healthy democracy and a well-informed society. By understanding the challenges and supporting journalists, we can work towards a world where everyone has access to free and independent information" the statement concluded.
The United Nations General Assembly declared May 3 to be World Press Freedom Day, observed to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression enshrined under Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
