DAILY COURIER — Oyo State has been thrown into mourning following the passing of former Governor, Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, a revered statesman and one of Nigeria’s most brilliant minds, just days before his 90th birthday.
Governor Seyi Makinde announced the news via his official Facebook page on Sunday morning, expressing deep sorrow over the death of the elder statesman, whom he described as a “renowned mathematician” and “brilliant mind” who served the state and the country selflessly.
“We are saddened by the passing of His Excellency Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo this morning, just days before his 90th birthday. Baba was a brilliant mind, a renowned mathematician. He will be remembered for his selfless contributions to the development of Oyo State and Nigeria,” Governor Makinde wrote.
In honour of the late former Governor’s legacy, Governor Makinde has ordered that flags across Oyo State be flown at half-mast for one week. This, he said, is a mark of respect and mourning for a man who once held the reins of power in the state and left a lasting impact through service and intellect.
Dr. Olunloyo, who served as the Governor of the old Oyo State during the Second Republic, is widely remembered for his intellectual prowess, particularly in mathematics, and his principled approach to governance. Despite spending a short time in office, his legacy has endured, and he remained a respected voice in the state’s political and intellectual circles.
Governor Makinde noted that he was privileged to have shared a personal relationship with the late Dr. Olunloyo and to have benefitted from his mentorship and wisdom. “I am honoured to have had the privilege to know him and benefit from his wise counsel. He will be sorely missed,” he added.
Condolences have started pouring in from across the country as Nigerians remember a man who stood tall in academia, politics, and public service. Dr. Olunloyo's death marks the end of an era for Oyo State and Nigeria's political history.
Governor Makinde concluded his message with a heartfelt prayer: “May Baba's soul rest in peace and may God grant his family and loved ones the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss.”
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
