DAILY COURIER - In a concerted effort to bolster road safety initiatives, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reiterated its unwavering commitment to the United Nations' objectives aimed at mitigating road traffic accidents.
According to a statement today by the Corp's spokesperson Oluwasegun Ogungbemide, this affirmation was made by the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, during the inauguration of a one-day seminar focused on reviewing the Marrakech Declaration on Road Safety. The event took place at the FRSC National Headquarters in Abuja on Monday, March 24, 2025.
Corps Marshal Mohammed highlighted Nigeria's proactive stance in the global campaign against road traffic crashes, emphasizing the FRSC's pivotal role as the nation's lead agency in traffic management and safety administration. He recalled Nigeria's active participation in the inaugural Global Road Safety Conference held in Moscow in 2009, which culminated in the United Nations declaring 2011-2020 as the Decade of Action for Road Safety.
"Let me, therefore, restate that FRSC will remain committed to the success of the goals of the campaign as espoused in 2021-2030, which the United Nations declared," Mohammed asserted.
The Corps Marshal also expressed gratitude towards road safety stakeholders and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for their relentless support in promoting road safety campaigns. He extended special commendation to Hon. Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, founder of Kwapda'as Road Safety Demand (KRSD) and President of the Court of Appeal, for her patriotic contributions during the recent global conference on road safety held in Marrakech, Morocco. Mohammed urged other NGOs to emulate her exemplary dedication.
In her address, Hon. Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem lauded the FRSC for its consistent efforts in fostering a safer road environment. She encouraged NGOs dedicated to road safety to intensify their advocacy programs within the country. Justice Dongban-Mensem further pledged that KRSD would pursue road safety objectives with renewed vigor.
The seminar featured expert discussions aimed at reviewing the Marrakech Declaration and formulating actionable recommendations for future initiatives. Additionally, two awards recognizing Nigeria's commitment to road safety were publicly presented during the event.
Attendees included representatives from various road safety NGOs, principal officers of the FRSC, and other key stakeholders, all unified in their dedication to advancing road safety measures in alignment with global standards.
