DAILY COURIER - The French government has lauded the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for its remarkable achievements in combating illicit drug trafficking and securing convictions of offenders in Nigeria.
The commendation came from the French Ambassador to Nigeria, Marc Fonbaustier, during the handover of operational equipment to the NDLEA at its National Headquarters in Abuja on March 13, 2025.
Speaking at the event, Fonbaustier praised the NDLEA’s impressive track record over the past four years, highlighting the agency’s success in 57,792 arrests, 9.9 million kilograms of drug seizures, and 10,572 convictions. He noted that Nigeria's robust anti-narcotics enforcement places the country in a strong position for greater partnership and collaboration with France.
“You’re one of the best in the world in terms of the fight against illicit drugs and narcotics. Your operational successes in arrests, seizures, and high conviction rates set an example. We can learn from you, just as you can learn from us,” Fonbaustier stated.
In his response, NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Mohamed Buba Marwa, expressed gratitude for the donation, emphasizing the strong Nigeria-France relationship, which has been further strengthened by President Bola Tinubu’s recent state visit to France.
“These equipment are vital operational tools that will significantly enhance our work and effectiveness in tackling drug-related crimes,” Marwa said.
He also reiterated Nigeria’s request for special training in investigations and cyber transactions, as well as support for the Alternative Development Project, which seeks to encourage cannabis growers to transition to cultivating alternative crops.
The French government’s donation and recognition of the NDLEA’s success reflect the increasing international support for Nigeria’s fight against drug trafficking. The partnership is expected to bolster intelligence sharing, operational capacity, and training for law enforcement officers in tackling the complex global drug trade.
The NDLEA remains committed to intensifying its war on illicit drugs, ensuring that Nigeria continues to set a global example in anti-narcotics enforcement.
