DAILY COURIER — In a significant move to transform healthcare delivery in Nigeria and West Africa, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has partnered with the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) to support the development of the African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE). The state-of-the-art medical facility, currently under construction in Abuja, is poised to become a regional hub for specialized treatment in oncology, haematology, and cardiology.
The partnership was highlighted during a high-level tour of the AMCE site led by Afreximbank President Dr. Benedict Oramah and NNPC Limited’s Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Dapo Segun. The visit, which included industry leaders and key stakeholders, showcased the progress of the project and underscored NNPC’s commitment to advancing healthcare infrastructure in the region.
As a strategic partner, NNPC Limited is set to become an equity investor in the AMCE, marking a significant step in the company’s efforts to diversify its investments and contribute to Nigeria’s socio-economic development. The project, which is already in its construction and operational phases, has created approximately 3,000 jobs, providing a boost to the local economy.
Scheduled to commence commercial operations on June 5, 2025, the AMCE is expected to revolutionize healthcare in West Africa by offering world-class medical services in critical areas such as cancer treatment, blood disorders, and heart diseases. The facility will also serve as a training center for healthcare professionals, fostering capacity building and knowledge transfer in the region.
During the tour, Dr. Benedict Oramah emphasized the transformative potential of the AMCE. “This project represents a major milestone in our collective efforts to address the healthcare challenges facing Africa. By providing access to specialized medical care, we are not only saving lives but also creating a sustainable healthcare ecosystem that will benefit generations to come,” he said.
Mr. Dapo Segun, NNPC Limited’s Chief Financial Officer, reiterated the company’s commitment to the project. “NNPC is proud to be a part of this landmark initiative. Our investment in the AMCE reflects our dedication to supporting projects that have a direct impact on the well-being of Nigerians and the broader African community. This is a testament to our belief in the power of collaboration to drive meaningful change,” he stated.
The AMCE is expected to reduce the need for medical tourism, which has seen many Nigerians and West Africans travel abroad for specialized treatment. By offering advanced medical services locally, the facility will not only save costs but also improve access to life-saving treatments for patients across the region.
The project has been widely praised by healthcare experts and industry leaders, who see it as a game-changer for the African healthcare sector. “The AMCE is a beacon of hope for millions of Africans who struggle to access quality healthcare. It represents a new era of medical excellence and innovation on the continent,” said Dr. Aisha Mohammed, a leading oncologist and healthcare consultant.
As construction progresses, anticipation is building for the official launch of the AMCE in 2025. The facility is expected to attract patients from across West Africa and beyond, positioning Nigeria as a regional leader in healthcare delivery.
With NNPC Limited and Afreximbank at the forefront of this groundbreaking initiative, the AMCE is set to leave an indelible mark on the African healthcare landscape, offering hope and healing to millions.
