DAILY COURIER - The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), in a bid to ensure the safety of road users during the Valentine’s Day celebrations has announced stringent measures to curb drunk driving and other traffic violations. Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed has directed the deployment of breathalysers and radar guns across the country to detect and apprehend motorists driving under the influence of alcohol.
The FRSC’s operational and educational tools have been fully mobilized to mitigate road traffic crashes during the festive period. The Corps Marshal emphasized that the celebration of love and care should not be marred by preventable accidents caused by reckless driving, excessive speed, or drunk driving.
In a statement issued on February 14, 2025 by the Corp's spokesperson Oluwasegun Ogungbemide, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed ordered Commanding Officers nationwide to ensure massive deployment of FRSC personnel for enhanced visibility, traffic control, and strict enforcement of traffic regulations. A key component of this enforcement is the use of breathalysers to test suspected drunk drivers.
“Operatives deployed should go all out with breathalysers and radar guns to ensure that suspected drunk drivers are tested and stopped from continuing their trips,” the Corps Marshal stated. This measure aims to prevent unnecessary deaths, injuries, and property damage caused by impaired driving.
The FRSC’s proactive approach underscores the dangers of drunk driving, which remains a leading cause of road traffic accidents during festive periods. By deploying breathalysers, the Corps seeks to deter motorists from driving under the influence and enforce compliance with traffic laws.
The Corps Marshal highlighted the significance of Valentine’s Day as a global celebration of love and care, urging motorists to reflect these values by adhering to road safety regulations. “Motorists who wish to celebrate must be exemplary by complying with all road traffic regulations,” he said. He warned that the FRSC would not spare any driver caught violating established laws, including those driving under the influence of alcohol.
To further enhance safety, the FRSC has encouraged road users to leverage its 122 toll-free emergency line to report crashes, obstructions, or incidents of drunk driving. This initiative aims to ensure prompt intervention and appropriate action by FRSC operatives.
While reminding celebrants to adhere to safety guidelines, the Corps Marshal called on all road users to cooperate with FRSC personnel deployed across the country. “Their presence on the road is for the good of all,” he said, emphasizing that the FRSC’s efforts are aimed at protecting lives and property.
The FRSC’s comprehensive strategy includes not only enforcement but also public education campaigns to raise awareness about the dangers of drunk driving and other traffic violations. The Corps has urged Nigerians to celebrate responsibly and prioritize safety during the Valentine’s Day festivities.
The FRSC’s deployment of breathalysers and radar guns represents a significant step in the fight against drunk driving in Nigeria. By targeting impaired drivers, the Corps aims to reduce the incidence of road traffic crashes and create a safer environment for all road users.
As Nigerians celebrate love and companionship this Valentine’s Day, the FRSC’s message is clear: love and care should extend to responsible driving and respect for traffic laws. The Corps remains committed to ensuring that the festivities are not overshadowed by avoidable tragedies on the roads.
