DAILY COURIER – A Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Jimeta, Yola, on Monday, January 7, 2025, convicted and sentenced a man, Mr. Nuhu Isah, to six months imprisonment for criminal intimidation and instigating mob action against officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
A statement today by the corp's spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide disclosed that the presiding judge, His Worship Mohammed Njidda, gave the ruling with an option of a N20,000 fine after the defendant pleaded guilty to the charges. The court heard that Mr. Isah, a passer-by, had on January 5, 2025, recorded an FRSC patrol team performing their lawful duties. During the recording, he intimidated the officers and incited passengers to mob the team, creating a dangerous situation on the highway.
The incident led to Mr. Isah’s arrest and subsequent arraignment in court, where he was found guilty of his actions, which were deemed detrimental to public safety and order.
Reacting to the court’s verdict, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, emphasized the importance of cooperation among road users in ensuring safety on Nigeria’s highways.
“Safety on our roads is a collective responsibility. Road users must contribute to making our highways safer rather than engaging in acts that threaten public order and endanger lives,” he said.
The Corps Marshal reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to enforcing road safety standards and ensuring smooth traffic flow across the nation’s highways. He also stated that no amount of intimidation or threats from individuals would deter FRSC personnel from performing their duties.
The FRSC’s vigilance during the festive season underscores its commitment to road safety. The Corps deployed its entire workforce to manage traffic flow and respond promptly to emergencies. This proactive strategy has been pivotal in reducing accidents and ensuring a safer travel experience for Nigerians.
In light of this development, the FRSC urges all Nigerians to avoid actions that could disrupt road safety operations. The Corps also called on the public to respect law enforcement officers as they carry out their duties to protect lives and ensure order on the highways.
The case serves as a stern warning to those who might attempt to obstruct or endanger the activities of road safety officials in the future.
