DAILY COURIER - National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has called for decisive and proactive action to tackle banditry in Nigeria, particularly through offensive operations targeting criminal elements hiding in forests.
Ganduje made this call during a sympathy visit to Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, following the recent tanker explosion in the state that claimed numerous lives. Addressing the governor and the people of Niger, Ganduje commended their efforts in maintaining peace within the state, despite its expansive landmass and numerous forests that pose significant security challenges.
In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Edwin Olofu, Ganduje highlighted the need to shift from reactive to offensive security strategies. Drawing from his experience as the former governor of Kano State, he noted the transformation of the Falgore Forest into a military training ground, which effectively eradicated criminal activities in the area.
“The solution to this menace is to conquer the forest. The bandits are in the forest. Why have we been on the defensive instead of being on the offensive? When I was governor of Kano State, I requested through the Federal Government that the military take over Falgore Forest. They established a military training ground there, and that was how bandits were chased away from the forest. Today, Kano is at peace,” Ganduje stated.
He expressed condolences to the families of the victims of the tanker explosion and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured. “We sincerely condole with the government and the good people of Niger, the families of the deceased, and the injured ones,” Ganduje said.
Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, in response, appreciated the solidarity shown by the APC leadership. He reiterated the state government’s commitment to creating awareness among residents about the dangers of fuel scooping during tanker accidents.
Bago also appealed to the Federal Government to address critical infrastructure issues in the state, particularly the Suleja-Minna road, to reduce accidents and improve safety for residents and travelers.
“On behalf of Nigerlites, we truly appreciate this visit. We are doing a lot to educate our people about the dangers of scooping fuel whenever such accidents occur,” Governor Bago stated.
Ganduje’s visit underscores the APC leadership’s commitment to addressing security challenges and supporting states affected by tragedies, while emphasizing the need for innovative solutions to combat insecurity across the nation.
