DAILY COURIER – The All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Rt. Hon. Oriyomi Adewunmi Onanuga, the Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives and a distinguished federal lawmaker representing the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State.
In a statement issued by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the party described Onanuga’s death as a shocking and tragic loss to the party, the House of Representatives, and the nation at large.
Fondly referred to as Ijaya by her peers and admirers, Onanuga was a second-term lawmaker known for her intellect, vibrancy, and dedication to public service. Born in Hammersmith, London, on December 2, 1965, she had a distinguished career as both a legislator and an entrepreneur. She first won election to the House of Representatives in 2019 on the platform of the APC and was re-elected in 2023.
Onanuga’s legislative contributions were significant, particularly during her tenure as Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, where she championed policies aimed at uplifting Nigerian women and promoting social equity. Her exceptional performance in the 9th Assembly earned her elevation to the position of Deputy Chief Whip in the 10th Assembly.
The APC hailed her as a highly cerebral legislator whose passion for excellence and dedication to governance were unparalleled. “Rt. Hon. Onanuga was a fine and vibrant lawmaker whose remarkable contributions to the House of Representatives and the APC will not be forgotten,” the statement read.
The party extended its heartfelt condolences to her immediate family, the leadership and members of the House of Representatives, her constituents in Ogun State, and the government and people of the state.
The APC emphasized that Onanuga’s passing is a profound loss, not only to her constituency but also to the entire nation. The party pledged to honor her legacy by continuing to uphold the values she represented.
As the nation mourns, tributes have poured in from colleagues, friends, and political associates, reflecting her significant impact on Nigerian politics and society.
The party concluded its statement by praying for the repose of her soul: "May her soul find eternal rest. Amen."
