DAILY COURIER - Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic boat mishap that claimed several lives, including women, petty traders, and artisans from Kogi State. The victims were traveling for business when the unfortunate incident occurred along the Dambo-Ebuchi section of the River Niger.
In a statement released on Friday by Ismaila Isah, Special Adviser on Media to the Governor, Governor Ododo described the accident as a heartbreaking loss, particularly because the victims were engaged in legitimate activities to support their families and contribute to the state’s economy. He extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and promised government support for those injured during the incident.
The Governor also voiced concerns about the increasing dangers of the waterway linking Kogi and Niger states, highlighting the frequency of such accidents. He called on relevant authorities to prioritize safety by implementing robust measures to mitigate the risks associated with water transportation.
Commending the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) for its swift response in the search and rescue operations, Governor Ododo urged for enhanced collaboration between agencies to prevent future mishaps and to strengthen emergency response mechanisms.
The tragic accident occurred when a boat transporting traders to the Katcha weekly market in Niger State capsized, leading to multiple fatalities and injuries. NIWA confirmed the incident, emphasizing the need for safer navigation protocols along the River Niger.
Governor Ododo reaffirmed his administration's commitment to addressing safety challenges on the state’s waterways and pledged to support affected families and survivors in their recovery.
The incident has drawn attention to the critical need for improved infrastructure and safety standards on Nigeria’s inland waterways, underscoring the necessity of collective action to protect lives and livelihoods.
