DAILY COURIER - The Akoko-Edo Forum (AEF) has expressed concerns over what it describes as the systemic marginalization of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area in the distribution of political appointments and state resources under the new Edo State administration.
In a statement signed by Barr. (Mrs.) Mary Opii on behalf of the Akoko-Edo Development Association, the forum congratulated Governor Monday Okpebholo on his recent swearing-in and lauded his early appointments. However, the group appealed to the Governor to address the longstanding neglect of their area, which they claim has persisted through successive administrations.
The forum highlighted that Akoko-Edo has historically been excluded from top-level appointments in Edo State, despite being a significant contributor to electoral success. The group reminded the Governor that the local government provided the second-largest block vote in the last election and argued that this level of support deserves proper recognition.
The AEF expressed fears that Akoko-Edo could be overlooked again in the distribution of infrastructure and other democratic dividends, continuing a pattern they described as "serial and systematic marginalization."
The group called on Governor Okpebholo to fulfill his campaign promises by giving Akoko-Edo people a prominent position in the state government and prioritizing the area in infrastructure development. They warned against relegating the local government to relevance only during election campaigns.
The AEF emphasized the need for urgent intervention to reverse the trend of neglect, stressing that fair representation in governance and equitable distribution of resources would demonstrate the administration's commitment to inclusivity and justice.
While voicing their concerns, the forum reiterated its support for Governor Okpebholo and expressed optimism that the administration would take proactive steps to address the issues raised.
The statement concluded with a plea for the Governor to prioritize Akoko-Edo’s development, ensuring that the local government enjoys its fair share of Edo State’s political and economic opportunities.
