Abuja, Nigeria – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that 114 media organizations have successfully met the deadline for accreditation to cover the upcoming Edo State governorship election. This was announced in a press release by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC's Information and Voter Education Committee, on Monday, September 9, 2024.
In response to an earlier statement urging media houses to submit applications by Thursday, September 5, INEC has completed the verification process. A total of 721 media personnel from newspapers, radio, television, and online platforms have been accredited, with their details uploaded to INEC's website and social media platforms.
The accredited personnel, including reporters, cameramen, broadcast engineers, and support staff, will be allowed full access to all voting and collation centers during the election. INEC reassured that accreditation tags will be available ahead of the election day to ensure smooth coverage of the electoral process.
While granting lawful access to voting locations, INEC emphasized the need for media houses to adhere to professional ethics, laws, and its regulations during the election. The Commission called for unbiased reporting and observation of the election processes to ensure transparency.
INEC remains committed to a fair and credible election, working closely with observers and media to maintain accountability throughout the electoral process.
