DAILY COURIER – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Chief Edwin Clark, a former federal commissioner for information and an influential leader of the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF). The revered statesman, who passed away at the age of 97, was widely known for his passionate advocacy for resource control, economic justice, and environmental protection in the Niger Delta.
Chief Edwin Clark was born on May 25, 1927, in Kiagbodo, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State. Over the course of nearly six decades, he played a pivotal role in Nigeria's political landscape, serving in various capacities as a local councillor, a member of state and federal cabinets, and a relentless advocate for the rights of his people.
On behalf of the federal government, President Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences to the Clark family, the Ijaw nation, the people of the Niger Delta, and the government of Delta State. The President described Chief Clark’s passing as a "deeply sobering loss," acknowledging the statesman’s immense contributions to Nigeria’s political and social development.
Reflecting on his legacy, President Tinubu hailed Chief Clark as a formidable leader whose influence extended far beyond his region. “Chief Clark spoke for the Niger Delta. He spoke for the nation. His views and interventions on national issues were distinct and patriotic,” the President noted.
The late elder statesman was renowned for his unwavering stance on justice and equity, often taking courageous positions in the face of opposition. As a lawyer and educationist, he remained committed to the unity of Nigeria, constantly working across ethnic and political lines to promote national cohesion.
“Pa Clark, a lawyer and educationist, believed in a united Nigeria, and until his last breath, he never stopped reaching out to people from different parts of the country to work together to preserve national unity based on justice and equity,” President Tinubu stated.
The President further commended Chief Clark’s contributions to the principles of true federalism, noting that history will remember him as a staunch defender of the Niger Delta’s rights and a key proponent of Nigeria’s democratic growth.
“As an astute politician, his political opponents never doubted the weight of his words, his confidence, and his conviction when he spoke. Indeed, a patriot has transitioned to the great beyond. History will remember him as a man who fought gallantly for the rights of the people of the Niger Delta, unity in diversity, and true federalism. I know many generations will remain proud of how his efforts contributed to national prosperity and stability,” the President said.
In his final tribute, President Tinubu offered prayers for divine comfort for Chief Clark’s family, friends, and all those affected by his passing.
Chief Edwin Clark’s legacy as a fearless advocate, elder statesman, and unyielding voice for justice will continue to inspire future generations in Nigeria and beyond.
