DAILY COURIER - In a bold move to address the rising menace of road accidents caused by driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol and drugs, the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, has launched a nationwide campaign to combat reckless driving and promote safer road use.
The initiative, which took center stage at Jabi Central Motor Park in Abuja on Thursday, February 6, 2025, underscores the judiciary’s commitment to safeguarding the lives of Nigerian road users.
Justice Dongban-Mensem, speaking at the event, described driving under the influence as a grave offense that endangers lives and undermines national development. She called for a collective stand against the menace, urging Nigerians to adopt a more responsible driving culture.
“As a nation, we must take a decisive stand against this menace and work towards creating a safer and more responsible driving culture,” Justice Dongban-Mensem declared. “Driving under the influence is not just a traffic violation; it is a threat to public safety and a disregard for human life.”
The campaign, organized in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), seeks to raise awareness about the dangers of DUI and enforce stricter compliance with traffic laws. It has garnered support from various stakeholders, including transport unions, law enforcement agencies, and road safety advocacy groups.
FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, commended Justice Dongban-Mensem for her leadership in the fight against drunk driving, describing it as a significant step towards deepening the partnership between the judiciary and law enforcement agencies. He emphasized the need for collective action to ensure the success of the campaign.
“The President of the Court of Appeal’s stance against driving under the influence is a call to action for all Nigerians,” Mohammed stated. “We must work together to create a safer and more responsible driving culture. This includes educating ourselves and others about the dangers of driving under the influence, reporting incidents of reckless driving, and supporting initiatives that promote road safety.”
Representing the NDLEA Chairman, Brigadier General Buba Marwa (Retd), a senior official of the agency reiterated the agency’s zero-tolerance policy towards DUI. He warned that offenders would face the full force of the law and pledged the NDLEA’s readiness to collaborate with the FRSC in enforcing traffic regulations.
Justice Dongban-Mensem also urged commuters to take responsibility for their safety by being vigilant and assertive on the road. She encouraged Nigerians to demand their right to safe trips and report drivers who exhibit reckless behavior.
The Chairman of Jabi Central Motor Park, Mr. Gabriel Okeh, lauded the initiative, describing it as a timely and necessary intervention. He pledged the support of transport unions and park operators in ensuring the success of the campaign.
“We commend the President of the Court of Appeal for her bold stance against driving under the influence,” Okeh said. “This is a step in the right direction, and we pledge our full support to this initiative aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens.”
The campaign marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to curb road accidents and promote safer driving habits. With the judiciary taking a proactive role, the initiative is expected to galvanize broader public participation and strengthen enforcement mechanisms.
As the nation grapples with the devastating impact of road crashes, Justice Dongban-Mensem’s leadership serves as a rallying point for all stakeholders to unite in the fight against drunk driving. The message is clear: driving under the influence will no longer be tolerated, and every Nigerian has a role to play in ensuring safer roads for all.
