DAILY COURIER - The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed that its 132kV transmission line and underground cables, which deliver electricity to Central Area and surrounding districts in Abuja, were vandalized, leading to a significant power outage.
According to the company, the incident, which occurred around the Millennium Park axis of Abuja, involved the theft of 40 meters of 1x500mm² XLPE conductors from two 132kV transmission lines. These cables are essential for transporting bulk electricity to TCN’s 132kV Central Area transmission substation, which then distributes power through eight feeders to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) for further supply to its customers in the area.
The attack has caused a massive disruption, impacting over 60% of power supply to Abuja, including areas such as Maitama, Wuse, Jabi, Lifecamp, Asokoro, Utako and Mabushi. The power outage has left thousands without electricity as repairs are underway.
TCN engineers have been swiftly mobilized to the site to begin repairs on the damaged cables. The company is urging Nigerians to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to security operatives. “We must work together to protect our transmission equipment and installations. This is crucial for the continued development of the nation's power sector,” said Ndidi Mbah, General Manager of Public Affairs at TCN.
The company’s call for vigilance comes at a time when the country faces increasing challenges related to the protection of critical infrastructure, with vandals targeting essential power transmission lines and equipment. TCN's appeal underscores the need for collective effort in securing the power sector, which is vital for national development.
