DAILY COURIER - The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will remain closed on Thursday, January 9, 2025, in honor of the passing of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. The announcement was accompanied by a tribute recognizing Carter’s role in strengthening U.S.-Nigeria relations, particularly as the first American president to visit Nigeria.
“We remember former President Jimmy Carter, a tireless advocate for peace, democracy, and human rights. His commitment to supporting Nigeria’s democratic process and fostering stronger bilateral ties leaves a lasting legacy that continues to inspire us,” the embassy’s statement read.
President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden also issued a heartfelt statement reflecting on the extraordinary life of Carter, who passed away at the age of 100. Calling him a “dear friend,” the Bidens underscored Carter’s remarkable contributions over six decades of public service.
“Jimmy Carter was not only a great leader but also a man of unparalleled character and courage,” President Biden remarked. “He dedicated his life to eradicating disease, fostering peace, advancing human rights, and lifting millions around the world. His humility and unwavering faith made him a beacon of hope for many.”
Carter’s visit to Nigeria during his presidency in 1978 marked a significant milestone in U.S.-Nigeria relations. His efforts to support Nigeria’s transition to democracy during a period of military rule were pivotal. Carter’s focus on promoting democracy and peace resonated with the Nigerian people, strengthening ties between the two nations.
Beyond his political achievements, Carter’s global humanitarian initiatives, such as his work through The Carter Center to fight diseases like guinea worm and river blindness, left an indelible mark on communities worldwide.
President Biden announced plans for a state funeral to honor Carter’s life and legacy. The event will be held in Washington, D.C., and will commemorate Carter’s roles as the 39th President of the United States, Governor of Georgia, a naval officer, and a humanitarian.
“Jimmy Carter showed us the meaning of a life of purpose and service,” Biden stated. “He proved that America is a great nation because of its decency, courage, and compassion. His partnership with Rosalynn was the epitome of humble leadership and patriotism.”
The Bidens extended their condolences to the Carter family and urged Americans, particularly the youth, to study Carter’s life as an example of integrity and service.
As the world reflects on Carter’s immense contributions, the closure of U.S. diplomatic missions in Nigeria serves as a poignant reminder of his profound impact on international relations and humanity. The embassy and consulate will resume operations on Friday, January 10, 2025.
Carter’s legacy as a champion of peace and democracy continues to inspire generations, ensuring that his memory lives on as a symbol of hope and unwavering commitment to the greater good.
