DAILY COURIER - President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed profound grief over the tragic fuel tanker explosion that claimed over 80 lives and left many others injured at Dikko Junction, Gurara Local Government Area, Niger State. The devastating incident occurred on Saturday, January 18, 2025, leaving a trail of human and environmental devastation.
In a press statement released on Sunday, President Tinubu conveyed his condolences to the affected families, the Emir of Suleja, Sarkin Zazzau Mallam Muhammed Ibrahim, and the government and people of Niger State. The President described the incident as both tragic and preventable, urging citizens to exercise caution and avoid approaching accident sites, particularly those involving fuel-laden vehicles.
Representing the President, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, visited the Emir of Suleja on Sunday to offer condolences on behalf of the federal government. The ministers extended the President’s heartfelt sympathies and pledged federal support for the victims and their families.
The Emir of Suleja, His Royal Highness Mallam Muhammed Ibrahim, expressed gratitude for the President’s concern and the federal government’s solidarity during this time of grief.
President Tinubu has directed the provision of comprehensive medical care for the injured, many of whom are receiving treatment in hospitals in Suleja and surrounding areas. Additionally, he has instructed security and road safety agencies to implement stricter measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Recognizing the dangerous practice of fuel scooping, which contributed significantly to the high death toll, the President mandated the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to launch a nationwide awareness campaign. This initiative aims to educate citizens on the severe risks and environmental hazards associated with scooping fuel from fallen tankers.
In his statement, President Tinubu reiterated the importance of safety and caution during emergencies involving hazardous materials. He urged all Nigerians to prioritize their safety and avoid actions that could lead to further tragedies.
As Niger State mourns this immense loss, the federal government’s commitment to providing support and addressing the root causes of such disasters is expected to bring solace and prevent future tragedies.
