DAILY COURIER - President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria delivered a stirring address at the swearing-in ceremony of Ghana's newly inaugurated President, John Dramani Mahama, emphasizing the triumph of African democracy and the enduring bond between Nigeria and Ghana.
Speaking as a special guest of honor, President Tinubu lauded the peaceful democratic transition in Ghana, describing it as a milestone not just for the nation but for the African continent as a whole. He celebrated the event as proof of Africa's ability to sustain democratic and productive governance.
“Today, we celebrate African democracy as Ghana marks the transition from one democratic government to another,” Tinubu remarked. “This moment does more than symbolize another milestone in Ghanaian democratic society; it puts to rest any doubts about Africa’s capacity for democratic and productive endeavors.”
The Nigerian leader expressed pride in Ghana’s democratic achievements and urged critics of the continent to recognize the progress made by nations like Ghana and Nigeria. He stressed that Africa's path to success would be defined by its own pace and resilience.
Drawing inspiration from Ghana’s national symbol, President Tinubu likened the nation to a "Black Star rising high in the African sky," representing shared history, unity, and hope. He called for continued collaboration among African nations, emphasizing dialogue and peaceful resolutions to disagreements.
“We shall always strive to work together. Even when we disagree, we shall dialogue and discuss until we reach an agreement. Never, never shall we harm others or allow any outsider to hurt us or disrupt the unity for which so many of our heroes gave their sweat, blood, and lives to achieve,” he said.
President Tinubu paid homage to Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and Nigeria’s founding leaders, noting their vision for a united and prosperous Africa. He emphasized the importance of preserving the legacies of these leaders to strengthen bonds between nations.
Praising Ghana’s new President, John Mahama, Tinubu described him as a visionary leader deeply committed to his nation’s progress. He pledged Nigeria’s unwavering support and partnership, calling for enhanced collaboration between the two countries.
“President John Mahama and I share a deep friendship. My dear brother, I am here to work with you. You know you can count on Nigeria’s support and goodwill whenever needed. We are your brothers and sisters. The bond is strong and cannot be broken,” he affirmed.
President Tinubu urged the Mahama administration to champion subregional integration, tackling pressing issues such as poverty, youth unemployment, instability, and insurgency. He expressed confidence in Mahama’s ability to bring about positive change and contribute to regional prosperity.
Concluding his remarks, Tinubu extended his best wishes to Ghana and its people, expressing optimism for the nation’s future. He called on ECOWAS and the broader African community to unite for progress and prosperity.
“May Ghana’s democracy continue to grow stronger. May progress and prosperity be your portion. Let us all look forward to a future filled with hope, opportunity, and prosperity,” he said.
The ceremony was attended by dignitaries from across Africa and beyond, marking a momentous occasion in the continent’s democratic journey.
