DAILY COURIER - Amid rising concerns over insecurity in Anambra State, the Nigerian Forest Security Service (NFSS) has announced its readiness to collaborate with Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s administration to tackle the escalating menace of kidnappings and killings.
The move comes in response to a spate of recent violent incidents, including the December 30th massacre of eight persons in Chigbonu village, Umuike Ubahuekwem Ihiala, and the abductions of lawmakers and clergy.
Speaking on behalf of the NFSS, Anambra State Commander Destiny Jonas outlined the organization’s preparedness to deploy its expertise in securing the state's forests and bushes. Jonas emphasized that the NFSS specializes in forest terrain and is uniquely positioned to assist in eradicating criminal camps and territories.
“Our operations are primarily focused on forests and bushes, where we are highly familiar with the terrain,” Jonas stated. “We are ready to join forces with other security agencies to support Operation Udo Ga Di Na Anambra, an initiative by the state government aimed at restoring peace and security to our hinterlands.”
Jonas called for increased collaboration and formal recognition of the NFSS by government authorities, noting that their ability to gather intelligence and neutralize threats in forests is vital for the success of anti-crime initiatives.
“The NFSS is committed to rescuing Anambra’s forests from the grip of unknown gunmen and other criminal elements,” Jonas said. “However, recognition and strategic discussions with the government are crucial for us to launch comprehensive operations in identified black spots.”
The NFSS played a key role in ensuring the safety of those returning to Anambra for the festive season. Their deployment to remote and previously inaccessible areas, such as Achala, Igbariam, and Nsugbe, resulted in a largely hitch-free holiday period. Jonas revealed that the NFSS has mapped out flashpoints across the state and plans to intensify operations from January 2025 to rid these areas of criminal camps.
Jonas expressed concern over the economic impact of insecurity, noting that it has deterred investors from operating in Anambra State. He stressed that addressing security challenges is essential for restoring investor confidence and fostering economic growth.
“Our mission extends beyond combating criminality to include preventing deforestation and ensuring that our forests contribute positively to the state’s economy,” he added.
Jonas praised Deputy Commander-General (Intelligence) Amb. Dr. John Metchie for his unwavering support and commitment to the safety of Anambra’s residents. He also lauded the efforts of the NFSS Commander-General, Amb. Dr. Joshua Osatimehin, for fostering unity and cohesion within the organization.
“Dr. Metchie is an enigma who prioritizes the security and welfare of Nigerians. If we had more leaders like him in Anambra, the state would experience significant progress,” Jonas concluded.
As the NFSS prepares to intensify its operations, it calls on the Anambra State Government and other relevant stakeholders to provide the necessary support and permissions to enable the service to combat insecurity effectively.
With heightened efforts and collaboration among security agencies, Anambra residents hope for a safer and more secure environment in 2025.
