DAILY COURIER – The newly crowned Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, has commenced the traditional 21-day rites for his ascension to the throne of his forefathers, following his official presentation with the staff and certificate of office by Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, on Monday.
Oba Owoade, the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, was warmly received by jubilant residents of Oyo Town upon his arrival from Ibadan, where the official coronation ceremony took place. The streets of the ancient town were filled with people celebrating the historic event, as traditional customs and rituals were observed.
In line with tradition, all markets in Oyo Town, including the historic Akesan Market, were closed. The Iyaloja of Oyo, Alhaja Adijat Bakare, confirmed that the suspension of trading activities was in adherence to the customs of the Oyo people during the commencement of the Alaafin’s rites.
The 21-day rites are a mandatory process steeped in Yoruba tradition, symbolizing the new monarch's spiritual preparation and connection to the ancestral lineage of the Oyo Kingdom.
Governor Makinde Warns Against Bribery in Selection Process
Governor Makinde, during the coronation ceremony in Ibadan, issued a stern warning to the Oyomesi (the council of kingmakers) and other stakeholders against alleged acts of bribery and gratification during the selection process of the Alaafin.
The governor emphasized that any individual found guilty of collecting bribes during the selection process would be prosecuted. This statement followed claims by five members of the Oyomesi that the appointment of Oba Owoade was not based on their recommendation, as they had endorsed Prince Luqman Gbadegesin for the throne.
Makinde defended his decision, stressing that the selection of Oba Owoade adhered to due process. “The Alaafin of Oyo is not just a traditional ruler but the custodian of a rich cultural and historical heritage. Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade is a leader poised to uphold these values with wisdom and integrity,” he stated.
Oba Owoade’s Vision for the Oyo Kingdom
In his acceptance speech, Oba Owoade expressed deep gratitude to the people of Oyo for their support and pledged to prioritize the development of the kingdom. He outlined his vision for a new era of leadership focused on cultural preservation, youth empowerment, and economic growth.
“I am committed to leading the Oyo Kingdom with unity and a sense of purpose, ensuring that our culture and traditions remain vibrant for generations to come,” the monarch declared.
The new Alaafin was accompanied by a large delegation of his subjects, underscoring the significance of his ascension in the state’s traditional leadership history.
Oyomesi Challenges Selection Process in Court
Meanwhile, the head of the Oyomesi, High Chief Yusuf Akinade, maintained a guarded stance on the ongoing controversy surrounding the selection process. When contacted, he declined to comment, citing a pending court case.
“I don’t know anything about it. Whatever you want to know, you can contact our lawyer because the case is currently in court. I am the Bashorun, not an aspirant for the Alaafin,” he stated.
As the new Alaafin embarks on his traditional rites, the controversy surrounding his selection remains a subject of intense debate. However, many Oyo residents have expressed optimism that Oba Owoade’s reign will bring progress, unity, and prosperity to the kingdom.
The 21-day rites are expected to culminate in a grand ceremony, further solidifying Oba Owoade’s position as the custodian of the Oyo people’s rich cultural heritage.
