Daily Courier – Tragedy was averted at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Wednesday morning when an Allied Air Cargo aircraft skidded off Runway 22 during a routine landing. All five individuals on board were safely evacuated, with no injuries reported.
The cargo aircraft, registered as 5N-JRT, veered off the runway at approximately 10:05 a.m., causing a temporary suspension of operations at the busy airport. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) promptly deployed its Airport Emergency Response Team to the scene.
According to Mrs. Obiageli Orah, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, the quick response ensured the safety of all five occupants on the plane.
“Thankfully, there are no reported injuries. They were all safely evacuated and taken to the FAAN clinic for further checks,” she stated.
The quick action of emergency teams and the crew on board is credited with the successful evacuation, preventing what could have been a catastrophic event. The occupants were attended to at the airport clinic to ensure they were unharmed.
As a safety measure, the runway was temporarily closed to allow for clearing and inspection. FAAN assured the public that the runway would be reopened as soon as it was deemed safe for operations.
“The runway is currently being cleared and is expected to reopen for operations as soon as possible,” the statement added.
The Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau has commenced an inquiry into the incident. FAAN urged the public to avoid speculation while the investigation is ongoing, emphasizing its commitment to ensuring safety in aviation operations.
“We appreciate the understanding and patience of the aviation community and the general public during this period,” the statement concluded.
The incident underscores the importance of robust emergency protocols in aviation. With no injuries recorded and lives preserved, the outcome highlights the effectiveness of quick responses in averting potential disasters.
While investigations continue, the safe evacuation of all five individuals on board marks a significant relief for the aviation community and the nation at large.
