DAILY COURIER - President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to depart France for Cape Town, South Africa, to co-chair the 11th session of the Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission (BNC) alongside South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. The high-level event, scheduled for Tuesday, December 3, 2024, will be preceded by a ministerial meeting on Monday, December 2, at the South African Parliament Building.
According to a statement today by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy), the summit aims to deepen bilateral relations and foster cooperation in key areas between Africa's two largest economies. Discussions will span a broad spectrum of bilateral, regional, and global issues, with both leaders expected to build on commitments made during their June 2024 meeting in Johannesburg.
Established in 1999, the Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission serves as a strategic platform for fostering collaboration in critical areas such as trade, diplomacy, security, and economic development. This year’s session coincides with the Commission’s 25th anniversary, a significant milestone reflecting the enduring partnership between the two nations.
The 11th session will focus on deliberations within eight working groups covering: Political consultations, consular and migration matters. Banking and finance. Defence and security.
Others include: Manufacturing, social sector development, mines and energy. Trade and investments. Progress and Agreements
The two leaders will review progress achieved since the 10th session of the BNC held in Abuja from November 29 to December 1, 2021. Officials from both countries are also expected to sign several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements to formalize cooperation in specific areas.
President Tinubu will be accompanied by a high-level delegation, including state governors, cabinet ministers, and senior government officials. Their presence underscores Nigeria’s commitment to fostering closer ties with South Africa.
The first Heads of State-level meeting of the BNC was held in Pretoria in October 2019, setting the stage for sustained dialogue and cooperation. This year’s session seeks to build on that legacy, addressing challenges and exploring opportunities for mutual benefit.
President Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria shortly after the conclusion of the Commission’s activities.
This collaboration between Nigeria and South Africa symbolizes a shared vision for a prosperous and united Africa, highlighting the importance of strong bilateral relationships in addressing continental and global challenges.
