As a member of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council, I extend my congratulations to Comrade Grace Ike, the newly elected Chairman, for making history as the first female to occupy this prestigious position. Her victory, alongside the emergence of other executive members, is a significant moment for our union. However, it is also a call to action, as this new administration has inherited a council that has often been marred by division and crisis.
The NUJ FCT Council's history is replete with instances of leadership crises and factionalism, which have hindered its growth and effectiveness. Since its inception in 1981 under Comrade Offiong Okon, the council has navigated both commendable progress and troubling turbulence. The eras of leaders such as Amos Dunia, Ogbuefi Malachy Uzendu, and Emmanuel Ogbeche have shown the possibilities of progress but also highlighted the perils of discord. The challenges of quackery, financial mismanagement, and infrastructural struggles have further compounded the council's woes.
Today, Comrade Grace Ike stands at a pivotal juncture. Her inaugural address has rightly emphasized unity, progress, and excellence as the pillars of her administration. These ideals must translate into concrete actions that mend the fragmented union, foster inclusivity, and chart a path away from the crises of the past.
Appeal for Unity and Reconciliation
It is imperative for all members, including former aspirants, to embrace reconciliation and unity. The elections are over, and it is time to set aside personal ambitions for the greater good of the council. Comrade Grace Ike's administration must extend an olive branch to all stakeholders, including those who may still harbor grievances. The African proverb she cited—"If you want to go far, go together"—is particularly apt. The council's survival and success depend on the collective efforts of its members.
To those still fanning the embers of division, it is time to stop. Victory should come with magnanimity, and the newly elected leadership must lead by example in fostering dialogue and inclusivity. Let us not return to the days of intractable crises that once defined the council's trajectory. Instead, we should unite behind the shared vision of building a professional, progressive, and transparent union.
Matching Words with Actions
Comrade Grace Ike's outlined priorities—ranging from welfare and capacity building to infrastructural development and the pursuit of a journalists’ village—are laudable. However, the real test lies in translating these promises into tangible results. Establishing committees with measurable deliverables, institutionalizing annual general meetings, and ensuring financial transparency will be critical first steps.
Moreover, addressing the challenge of quackery in journalism must remain a top priority. Upholding professional integrity is not just about preserving the union's reputation but also about safeguarding the essence of our noble profession.
A Legacy of Unity and Progress
This administration has the unique opportunity to create a legacy that future generations will look back on with pride. By fostering unity, demonstrating accountability, and delivering on promises, Comrade Grace Ike and her team can transform the NUJ FCT Council into a beacon of professionalism and progress.
The road ahead is undoubtedly challenging, but with determination, inclusivity, and collective effort, it is a journey worth undertaking. Let us rally behind our new leadership and work together to build a stronger, united NUJ FCT Council.
