DAILY COURIER - Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, in a landmark effort to combat the impact of climate change and promote sustainable agriculture has presented ₦3 billion to over 2,381 beneficiaries across 80 communities under the Community Revolving Fund (CRF) of the Agro-Climate Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project. The initiative, executed in partnership with the World Bank, aims to bolster food security and sustainable landscape management across the state.
The cheque presentation ceremony, according to a statement today by the Governor's Spokesperson, Ismaila Isah, held at the Government House in Lokoja on Monday, underscored Governor Ododo’s commitment to addressing climate challenges while enhancing agricultural practices. Representing 170 groups from 80 communities, the direct beneficiaries are expected to leverage the funds to build climate-resilient practices that benefit their communities.
In his address, Governor Ododo reaffirmed the state’s dedication to the ACReSAL project, emphasizing its alignment with his administration’s broader development agenda. He stated, “This fund represents a step towards sustainable landscape management and climate resilience. It is part of our resolve to ensure food security while empowering our communities to combat the adverse effects of climate change.”
Governor Ododo expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for prioritizing sustainable agricultural practices across the nation. He highlighted how federal backing and the World Bank’s partnership have been instrumental in driving the ACReSAL project forward, ensuring the welfare of families and communities in Kogi State.
The governor urged recipients of the funds to use them responsibly, ensuring the project’s continuity and expansion. "This fund is not just an investment; it is a lifeline for our communities to sustain themselves and create a ripple effect of progress. We expect every beneficiary to demonstrate accountability so others in their communities can also benefit,” he said.
Kogi State’s Commissioner for Environment and Ecological Management, Engineer Joseph Oluwasegun, praised the initiative for positioning the state as a model for food security and sustainability. He said, “With this Community Revolving Fund, Kogi State is setting the pace for other states in Nigeria, proving that food sufficiency is achievable through climate-smart strategies.”
The State Coordinator of ACReSAL, Barrister Ladi Ahmed Jatto, provided insight into the program’s success. She noted that the first phase of disbursement in June 2024, which also impacted 2,381 beneficiaries, was deemed highly successful by the World Bank Task Team. She added, “This second phase is a testament to the effective utilization of the first and the exemplary governance structure in Kogi State.”
Jatto further explained that the CRF is an interest-free loan guaranteed by the state government and called on beneficiaries to ensure its effective use. “This fund represents an opportunity for communities to grow, but it also comes with the responsibility of repayment to ensure its continuity,” she emphasized.
The ACReSAL project is designed to increase the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices and foster integrated climate resilience management across Kogi’s 21 local government areas. Key objectives include mitigating the effects of climate change, enhancing food production, and strengthening rural economies.
This second phase of funding is expected to deepen the impact of the ACReSAL project, enabling more communities to adapt to changing environmental conditions while enhancing their agricultural productivity.
Governor Ododo’s administration continues to push for initiatives that address critical issues such as food security, environmental sustainability, and community empowerment. Through the CRF and similar programs, Kogi State is poised to become a national leader in climate resilience and sustainable development.
