DAILY COURIER – Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has conceded that his side is no longer in contention for the Premier League title this season, despite securing a 2-0 victory over Leicester City on Sunday. The win, which marked only their second in 14 matches across all competitions, leaves the defending champions in fifth place, 14 points behind league leaders Liverpool.
In a statement published late Sunday on the Premier League's official website titled “‘No chance’ – Guardiola rules Man City out of title race,” the Catalan coach expressed frustration over his team’s position and form.
Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, Guardiola was unequivocal about City’s title hopes. “We are far away from winning the Premier League. We accept there’s already no chance of that,” he said. “But we have other things to fight for – FA Cup, top four… and winning games helps.”
Guardiola acknowledged the team's recent struggles, stating, “It is not enjoyable right now; it is just relief. We have done incredible things for many years. It is not the best.”
City’s inconsistent form has been a significant talking point this season. After dominating English football for years, Guardiola’s side has struggled to replicate its usual high standards, compounded by injuries and tactical adjustments.
Injury Woes and January Signings
With the January transfer window opening on Wednesday, Guardiola hinted at potential reinforcements to address the team’s injury-hit squad.
“In some positions, we need help,” he admitted. “When we’re all together, we’re the team we were, but with important players out for weeks and months, it’s so difficult.”
City has particularly struggled with injuries in defense and midfield, areas that have been critical to their success in recent seasons. Key players have been sidelined for extended periods, exposing the team’s depth issues.
Despite ruling out the Premier League title, Guardiola remains focused on other objectives, including a strong finish in the top four and pursuing success in the FA Cup. With January reinforcements likely to arrive, City fans will hope the squad can rally and salvage what remains of the season.
Manchester City will return to action next weekend, with fans eager to see if the team can build on their victory over Leicester and reignite their campaign in other competitions.
