DAILY COURIER — The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) and the Cuban Embassy in Nigeria are joining forces to strengthen cultural exchanges and enhance ties between Africans and the global diaspora. This collaboration aligns with the objectives of The Decade for the People of African Descent, a global initiative aimed at fostering unity and celebrating the rich heritage of African descendants worldwide.
NiDCOM Chairman/CEO, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, emphasized the importance of African unity and cultural diversity during a strategic meeting with Cuban Ambassador to Nigeria, Miriam Morales Palmero, in Abuja.
Dabiri-Erewa highlighted the need for Africans across the globe to work together toward a stronger, more united continent.
“The Decade for the People of African Descent is a unique opportunity for Africans worldwide to build a stronger, united, and progressive continent,” she stated.
The NiDCOM Chair expressed the commission’s readiness to collaborate with the Cuban people and government, leveraging cultural exchanges to bolster diaspora engagement.
In response, Ambassador Palmero underscored the role of cultural exchanges in shaping collective identities and preserving shared histories. She drew parallels between Cuba’s celebration of African heritage and Nigeria’s own Badagry Door of Return Festival.
Ambassador Palmero extended an invitation to Dabiri-Erewa to participate in the upcoming *Decade for the People of African Descent* celebration in December. The event, to be held in Havana and Matanzas provinces, will explore the socio-economic and spiritual significance of the African diaspora’s historic journey.
The ambassador praised Dabiri-Erewa’s leadership and the impressive strides NiDCOM has made in diaspora engagement. She expressed optimism about establishing a mutually beneficial partnership between Cuba and NiDCOM, focusing on shared historical and cultural imperatives.
“Cultural exchanges are a powerful way to build and sustain identities,” said Palmero, highlighting the importance of collaboration in achieving shared goals.
As preparations for the Havana event unfold, the partnership between NiDCOM and the Cuban Embassy promises to deepen connections, celebrate shared heritage, and create opportunities for African descendants across the globe.
This initiative reflects a broader commitment to unity, diversity, and progress within the African diaspora.
