DAILY COURIER - The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued an urgent warning to the motoring public in Nigeria regarding the recall of thousands of Mercedes Benz and Ford vehicles due to safety defects that could pose significant risks to road users.
Mercedes Benz recalls over 37,000 vehicles globally
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has recalled 10,655 Mercedes Benz AG (MBAG) 350 and GLE 450 models produced between 2021 and 2022. The recall is attributed to faulty acceleration sensors that may increase the likelihood of crashes.
Additionally, 27,000 Mercedes Maybach S589 luxury sedans manufactured between 2021 and 2023 are being recalled due to engine control unit (ECU) software issues that cause overheating and potential engine stalling.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has directed immediate public sensitization to prevent the risks associated with these defects. The FRSC has urged dealers and users of these vehicles to halt sales and usage, advising them to contact manufacturers for necessary corrections.
Ford Motors recalls over 99,000 vehicles
Ford Motors has announced the recall of over 99,000 vehicles, including Bronco, Edge, Explorer SUVs, F-150 trucks, Aviator, and Nautilus SUVs from its Lincoln brand. These vehicles, produced between 2021 and 2022, are reported to have faulty engine intake valves that could crack or break.
The defect can lead to a sudden loss of drive power, increasing crash risks. Affected vehicles may exhibit a check-engine light on the dashboard or exhibit rough engine performance before complete power loss.
FRSC enforcement measures
In line with directives from the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, FRSC patrol operatives have been instructed to identify and stop affected vehicles on Nigerian roads to prevent further risks. Commanding Officers have been tasked with ensuring compliance by owners and advising them to contact manufacturers for rectification.
The FRSC urges road users to report sightings of these vehicles through the its dedicated Toll-Free Emergency Line: 122 and the National Traffic Radio, contacts: 08052998090 or 09067000015
Users are advised to immediately contact their dealers for necessary repairs and avoid driving these vehicles until the issues are resolved.
FRSC commitment to road safety
The FRSC reiterated its commitment to ensuring safer roads for all Nigerians. The agency emphasized the importance of public cooperation in reporting faulty vehicles and complying with safety measures to avert accidents.
