DAILY COURIER - Newly inaugurated Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has made significant moves to solidify his leadership team by appointing key figures to strategic roles within his government. The governor, elected under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has quickly crafted a team that blends seasoned political allies and experts with ties to influential figures, signaling his commitment to both loyalty and governance.
In a prominent appointment, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, son of former Edo Governor Adams Oshiomhole, has been named Commissioner for Health. The nomination is seen as a recognition of the Oshiomhole family’s enduring influence in Edo politics and a reward for their longstanding support of the APC. Dr. Oshiomhole, with a robust background in public health from institutions such as Harvard University and Tulane University, brings a wealth of expertise to the role, positioning him to address health challenges across the state.
The governor also appointed Barrister Musa Ikhilor as Secretary to the State Government (SSG), a position that will be critical in coordinating the administration’s policies and agendas. Ikhilor, with his extensive legal and parliamentary experience, is expected to provide strong leadership in implementing legislative reforms and governance strategies. His appointment, alongside Dr. Oshiomhole's, underscores Okpebholo’s intent to align with both seasoned political operators and the state’s traditional power structures.
Rounding out the early appointments, Hon. Samson Osagie, an established legal figure and former Edo State House of Assembly member, has been tapped as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice. Osagie, whose career spans roles in the Edo House and the House of Representatives, is well-regarded for his legal expertise and has earned respect as Vice President of the African Bar Association (West African Region). His background in public administration and development studies will be instrumental in navigating Edo’s legal landscape.
Governor Okpebholo’s appointments reflect a strategy of reinforcing connections with APC power players and establishing a coalition capable of swift policy implementation. His inauguration speech, delivered at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, emphasized his commitment to prioritizing public welfare, economic growth, and security.
“We will not betray this confidence,” he pledged to the people of Edo, underscoring his administration’s resolve to improve road infrastructure and address pressing issues of insecurity. Okpebholo expressed a clear objective to crack down on criminal activities that have disrupted farming and business operations, promising to restore stability across the state.
President Bola Tinubu, who congratulated Okpebholo on his inauguration, called on the new administration to strengthen democratic values and work for the betterment of Edo’s citizens. He urged Okpebholo to bolster the state’s legislative independence, a subtle critique of the outgoing administration’s strained relationship with the legislature.
As Okpebholo’s administration settles into office, Edo residents and political analysts are closely watching his early decisions. His swift appointments suggest a readiness to consolidate power and capitalize on the support of APC heavyweights, hinting at a transformative approach to governance that is rooted in both tradition and reform. With the confidence of the people and party leadership, Okpebholo is positioned to embark on an impactful tenure aimed at meeting the aspirations of Edo’s citizens.
