DAILY COURIER — At least four people have been killed following a deadly attack by suspected gunmen enforcing the Monday sit-at-home order in Anambra State. The attack occurred in the early hours of Monday in the Ukpo community, Dunukofia Local Government Area, and Abatete, Idemili North Local Government Area.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers, arriving in Abatete around 8:30 am, opened fire on residents and moved to the Ukpo Roundabout, where they targeted both civilians and members of the Anambra State Vigilante Operatives (AVG). The gunmen reportedly set several vehicles belonging to the vigilante group ablaze.
At least four vigilante operatives were confirmed dead, while several others, including the President General of Abatete Community, Chimame Ezigbo, sustained severe injuries. Ezigbo was rushed to a hospital for urgent medical attention after being struck by a bullet. Another vigilante member was also hospitalized after sustaining gunshot wounds.
Graphic videos circulating on social media show the aftermath of the attack. One video captures the lifeless body of a vigilante operative lying in a pool of blood at Ukpo Roundabout. Three other corpses are seen in a similar state in Abatete.
In another video, community members are seen rushing Chimame Ezigbo to a hospital, highlighting the severity of the attack.
While the exact number of casualties remains unclear, a source from the area confirmed that at least four people lost their lives. The attackers fled the scene after causing significant damage and fear among residents.
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed awareness of the incident. Police Public Relations Officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga stated that operatives had been deployed to the affected areas and promised to provide more details once a full briefing was received.
“We are aware of the incident and have sent our personnel to the scene. Further updates will be provided as soon as we have comprehensive details,” Ikenga said.
The incident underscores the continued violence associated with the enforcement of the sit-at-home orders in Southeast Nigeria. Despite attempts by the government and security agencies to curb these activities, attacks on residents and security operatives have persisted, leaving communities in fear.
Residents have called on the government and security agencies to intensify efforts to restore peace and protect lives and property in the region.
The attack has left the affected communities reeling, with many residents fearing further violence as tensions remain high.
