DAILY COURIER — Minister of Defence, Badaru Abubakar, has declared that the end of banditry in Nigeria is imminent, following the Nigerian Air Force’s (NAF) induction of two advanced ATAK-129 helicopters into Operation Fansan Yamma Sector 2 in Katsina State.
During the commissioning ceremony held at the Airport Wing of the NAF base in Katsina on Monday, the Defence Minister lauded the recent successes of the military in the Northwest, where bandits’ hideouts were dislodged. He urged troops to maintain synergy with ground forces and other stakeholders to deliver a decisive blow to the enemies of peace and stability in the country.
The ATAK-129 helicopters, known for their precision, speed, and operational versatility, are expected to enhance the military’s capability to dismantle criminal elements in the region. The Minister emphasized their superiority over conventional fighter jets, particularly in targeting bandits operating in difficult terrain.
“These critical platforms ensure that no enemy can hide from justice,” Abubakar said. “The long arm of the law will reach those who seek to destroy our peace and stability.”
The Minister highlighted the tangible results of the military’s intensified operations, noting that farmers have started returning to their farms, children are back in school, businesses are thriving, and Nigerians are regaining a sense of security.
“We have witnessed tremendous successes in the last week, with several bandits' hideouts destroyed through the effective deployment of air and ground forces,” he said. “This progress gives us confidence that the end of banditry is near.”
Abubakar commended the troops for their courage and personal sacrifices in securing the country’s future, often at great personal cost.
“We salute you for leaving behind your families and the comfort of your homes to protect our nation,” he stated. “The Federal Government remains committed to providing you and your families with the necessary resources, incentives, and benefits to carry out this vital mission.”
The Defence Minister emphasized the importance of collaboration among all branches of the military and other security agencies. He urged troops to maintain synergy and coordination to maximize the effectiveness of ongoing operations.
“Synergy must remain our watchword to ensure we defeat the enemies of the state,” he said. “Together, we will dominate the battle space and achieve successful results.”
Abubakar also called for public cooperation, intelligence sharing, and prayers to support the military’s efforts.
Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Bala Abubakar, who accompanied the Defence Minister, reiterated NAF’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity and addressing security challenges. He assured Nigerians that the newly inducted helicopters would significantly bolster the fight against insurgency and banditry.
As the Federal Government continues to enhance the capacity of its armed forces, the induction of the ATAK-129 helicopters marks another step toward ensuring lasting peace and stability in the Northwest and across Nigeria. With intensified operations and improved resources, the military remains optimistic about eliminating banditry and other security threats in the near future.
