DAILY COURIER - Benin Republic held Nigeria to a 1-1 draw in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier on Thursday, forcing the Super Eagles to share points in a challenging match in Cotonou. Although Nigeria had already secured their spot in the AFCON tournament, the outcome of the match allowed them to solidify their position as group leaders.
The Cheetahs of Benin made an early impact, capitalizing on Nigeria's sluggish start. Mohamed Tijani found the back of the net for Benin just 16 minutes into the game, putting pressure on the Super Eagles, who struggled to assert dominance over their well-organized opponents. Benin Republic adopted a defensive approach, allowing Nigeria to press but consistently thwarting their advances.
By halftime, Benin held a 1-0 lead, leaving Nigeria's interim coach Austine Eguavoen to reconsider his strategy. In the second half, Eguavoen introduced fresh legs, bringing on Simon Moses and Victor Boniface in an effort to revitalize Nigeria's offense.
Nigeria intensified their attacks as the match wore on, but the Cheetahs held firm, leaving Nigerian fans anxious. Finally, in the 81st minute, Simon Moses delivered a precise cross into the box, where star forward Victor Osimhen outjumped Benin’s defenders to head the ball past the goalkeeper, leveling the score.
The draw leaves Nigeria with 11 points, securing their top position in Group D. Benin Republic sits in second place with seven points, followed by Rwanda with five points. Libya remains at the bottom of the group with four points.
With just one match left in the qualifiers, Nigeria will host Rwanda in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Monday. However, the game will be a "dead rubber," as Nigeria’s qualification is already confirmed.
The Super Eagles’ final group performance will serve as an opportunity for Eguavoen to fine-tune his squad ahead of the 2025 AFCON tournament.
