DAILY COURIER – The Edo Unity League (EUL) has issued a strong warning against the potential politicization and tribalism surrounding the selection of the next Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin (UNIBEN).
The group in a statement today signed by its Coordinator General, Prof. Akenuwa J. Obarogie, urged the Honourable Minister of Education to ensure that the process remains free from tribal jingoism and adheres strictly to due process.
The EUL emphasized that the outgoing Vice Chancellor has significantly advanced the university's standing through effective leadership, and they fear that succumbing to local tribal pressures could undermine this progress. "For the first time, a Yoruba Professor has served as Deputy Vice Chancellor, fostering an inclusive atmosphere," the statement noted, highlighting the importance of diversity in leadership roles.
The EUL expressed concerns that a narrow focus on ethnicity could overshadow the qualifications and competencies of candidates from various backgrounds. “Having enjoyed leadership from individuals within the same ethnic group for fifteen consecutive years, it would be regressive to demand that the next Vice Chancellor must come from Oredo Local Government or the Benin-speaking community,” they cautioned. Such demands, they argue, could stifle the collaborative spirit necessary for institutional excellence.
Furthermore, the statement called for a Vice Chancellor who possesses a comprehensive understanding of the university’s landscape and challenges, advocating for a selection grounded in fairness, equity, and strong academic credentials. “Our group stands for character, integrity, and administrative capability as the key attributes necessary for leading the university into its next phase of growth,” stated Prof. Akenuwa J. Obarogie, the Coordinator General of EUL.
The EUL’s appeal comes at a critical time as the final decision lies in the hands of the university council, who are urged to make choices based on ethics and the welfare of the institution rather than succumb to external pressures.
As the university community and broader stakeholders await the council's decision, the EUL's statement serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining institutional integrity in the face of potential divisive narratives. The call for unity and collaboration resonates deeply, as all parties involved seek a leadership transition that prioritizes the university’s mission and enhances its global standing.
