DAILY COURIER - The Super Eagles have safely returned to Nigeria following a distressing ordeal at a Libyan airport during their journey for a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier. The team, consisting of players and officials, was left stranded for approximately 13 hours at the airport, sparking widespread outrage after photos showing team members sleeping on benches surfaced online early Monday.
The incident caused an uproar, with fans and sports commentators criticizing the treatment of Nigeria’s national football team. Despite the delay and uncomfortable conditions, the Libyan authorities eventually cleared their flight, allowing the team to depart.
Captain of the Super Eagles, William Troost-Ekong, expressed his pride in the team's resilience, sharing his thoughts on social media. “Back home safe & sound. Proud of this team, NAIJA SPIRIT can’t be broken,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter). “Throw at us what you want, it’s in our blood to overcome. I’ve seen a lot in my 10 years with this group, but nothing like this, an experience that has brought us even closer together.”
Victor Boniface, a forward for Bayer Leverkusen, also shared his relief upon their return. “Back to Nigeria,” he wrote on his X account, reflecting the team's collective sigh of relief.
The ordeal has sparked discussions about the welfare of athletes during international competitions, with many calling for better coordination and treatment of national teams abroad. Despite the challenges, the Super Eagles remain focused on their AFCON qualifier and are determined to move forward as a united team.
