DAILY COURIER – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Major General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede as the acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), following the temporary indisposition of the substantive Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja. Major General Oluyede, who currently serves as the Commander of the Infantry Corps in Jaji, Kaduna, will assume his new role as COAS until General Lagbaja returns.
The 56-year-old Major General Oluyede and Lt. General Lagbaja are long-time colleagues, having trained together as members of the Nigerian Army’s 39th Regular Course. Commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1992 (retroactively effective from 1987), Oluyede’s distinguished military career spans several command positions and field operations, showcasing his dedication and strategic expertise. He achieved the rank of Major General in September 2020.
Throughout his career, Major General Oluyede has held numerous critical positions. He served as Platoon Commander and adjutant at 65 Battalion, Company Commander at 177 Guards Battalion, and Staff Officer with the Guards Brigade. He was also Commandant of the Amphibious Training School, demonstrating his range of experience across different army units and roles.
His service includes participation in key operations such as the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) Mission in Liberia, Operation HARMONY IV in Bakassi, and Operation HADIN KAI in the North East, where he commanded the 27 Task Force Brigade. Major General Oluyede’s involvement in these missions has earned him wide respect for his leadership and effectiveness in high-pressure environments.
Major General Oluyede’s commitment to duty has been recognized through numerous awards and honors. His accolades include the Corps Medal of Honour, the Grand Service Star, and the Field Command Medal. He also received the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Award and is a member of the National Institute. Oluyede’s training and commendations affirm his reputation as a respected officer within the Nigerian Armed Forces.
President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the appointment, emphasizing that Major General Oluyede will serve in this capacity until the return of Lt. General Lagbaja. Major General Oluyede is married and has three children, adding a personal dimension to his life of service.
The appointment of Major General Oluyede comes at a crucial time, with the Nigerian Army engaged in multiple security operations across the country.
