DAILY COURIER – The excitement surrounding Nigeria’s upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches has been tempered by the news that reigning Africa Player of the Year Victor Osimhen will miss the fixtures due to injury. This announcement came as Head Coach Augustine Eguavoen unveiled his 23-man squad, which includes captain William Ekong and standout players Ademola Lookman and Moses Simon.
Osimhen, who has been a prolific scorer for both club and country, will not take part in the crucial home-and-away series against Libya. His absence is a significant blow for the Super Eagles, who will first host Libya at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on October 11, before traveling to Benghazi for the return leg on October 15.
Eguavoen expressed disappointment over Osimhen’s injury, acknowledging the forward's vital role in the squad. “Victor has been instrumental in our attacking line, and losing him is certainly a setback. We wish him a speedy recovery,” he stated during the squad announcement.
The Super Eagles will still boast a strong lineup, with Ekong at the helm and Lookman, who has been in fine form at Atalanta, looking to fill the gap left by Osimhen. The squad also features other key players, including goalkeepers Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye, as well as defenders Bright Osayi-Samuel and Calvin Bassey.
Eguavoen’s selection highlights a mix of seasoned veterans and emerging talents. Players like Kelechi Iheanacho and midfielders Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi are expected to provide leadership and creativity. The return of Bright Osayi-Samuel and playmaker Chidera Ejuke, who has not featured in recent games, adds further depth to the squad.
While the absence of Osimhen looms large, the Super Eagles are determined to capitalize on their home advantage against Libya. The team will assemble in Uyo on October 7, beginning preparations for what promises to be a challenging encounter against a resilient Libyan side.
Fans are eagerly anticipating how the Super Eagles will adapt to Osimhen’s absence and whether they can secure crucial points in their AFCON qualifying campaign. The stakes are high as Nigeria aims to make a strong statement in their pursuit of a spot in the 2025 tournament in Morocco.
