DAILY COURIER - The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has announced plans to acquire 34 additional aircraft as part of efforts to bolster its air combat and support capabilities. This development follows a high-level Programme Management Review Meeting in Italy, led by the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, alongside officials from Nigeria’s Ministries of Defence and Finance. The meeting concluded a deal with the Italian aerospace company, Messrs Leonardo s.p.a., for the acquisition of fighter jets and helicopters.
According to a statement by NAF spokesperson, Air Commodore Olusola Akinboyewa, the federal government has procured six M-346 Fighter Ground Attack (FGA) jets, three of which are expected to be delivered in 2025. In addition, the NAF has reached an agreement for the acquisition of 24 more M-346 jets and 10 AW-109 Trekker helicopters, which will further strengthen Nigeria’s aerial capabilities.
Air Marshal Abubakar, during his visit to Italy, made a strategic stopover at the Leonardo Headquarters in Rome, where he engaged with top executives of the company. The visit sought to consolidate a long-term partnership between the NAF and the firm, ensuring continued collaboration and technical support. The CAS and his team also inspected the first batch of six M-346 jets, with three nearing completion, and assessed key support systems needed to enhance the operational readiness of the NAF.
The Review Meeting provided updates on the delivery schedules, with the CAS confirming that the first three of the 24 M-346 aircraft will arrive in Nigeria by early 2025. The remaining aircraft will be delivered by mid-2026. The 10 additional AW-109 Trekker helicopters, which will complement the two already acquired, are expected to arrive by early 2026.
“The M-346 jets, capable of both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, will significantly boost Nigeria’s air combat capabilities,” Air Commodore Akinboyewa said. He further explained that the AW-109 helicopters will enhance NAF's ability to conduct various combat support roles, including Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR), tactical airlift, and Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC).
During the visit, the Leonardo Aircraft Division also organized an aerial display, showcasing the advanced features and performance of the M-346 jets. The display emphasized the aircraft's versatility and potential to elevate Nigeria’s air combat operations.
Air Marshal Abubakar highlighted the importance of establishing a Programme Management Office to oversee the collaboration between the NAF and Leonardo. He also recommended setting up a maintenance hub in Nigeria to provide long-term support for the M-346 fleet, ensuring sustainable operation and maintenance of the aircraft.
The acquisition of the M-346 jets and AW-109 helicopters aligns with the CAS Command Philosophy, which prioritizes the transformation of the NAF for greater agility and resilience. The focus on fleet renewal and optimizing the force structure is intended to enhance the overall operational effectiveness of the NAF, making it better equipped to address security challenges in Nigeria.
With these acquisitions, the NAF is set to significantly enhance its air power capabilities, positioning itself as a stronger and more versatile force in the region.
