DAILY COURIER - The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, in an effort to reduce road traffic crashes during the end-of-year Ember Months has officially launched the 2024 Nationwide Ember Months Sensitisation Campaign.
According to a statement today by the Corp's spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide, this initiative focuses on curbing drivers' dangerous habits and enhancing passenger safety through aggressive public awareness efforts, especially as the year-end travel surge approaches.
At the campaign flag-off, the Corps Marshal emphasized the importance of empowering passengers to voice their concerns about reckless driving and actively report incidents through various platforms. He encouraged commuters to use the FRSC Mobile Application, call the 122 emergency hotline, or contact the National Traffic Radio on 107.1 FM for timely intervention against drivers who engage in unsafe practices.
Highlighting the theme, "Speak Up Against Dangerous Driving: Crashes Kill More Passengers than Drivers," Mohammed introduced a series of innovative public sensitization strategies. These include large-scale press conferences, mega town hall meetings, motorcade campaigns, transit rest areas, and advocacy at loading bays to ensure comprehensive reach. These initiatives are aimed at encouraging passengers to understand and assert their rights, particularly as records indicate that passengers are more frequently victims in road accidents than drivers.
Commanding officers nationwide have been directed to begin immediate execution of these extensive sensitization and advocacy campaigns. They will focus on re-educating passengers about road safety and strengthening their resolve to confront and report dangerous driving behavior.
Additionally, the FRSC is set to intensify efforts to ease traffic flow, rigorously enforce traffic laws, and improve public awareness, aligning with the Corps' goal to reduce road fatalities by 5% in 2024.
Mohammed also reminded passengers to assert their rights by reporting drivers who violate traffic regulations. The public is urged to use FRSC patrol officers and other security personnel along their routes to report any observed misconduct. Additionally, commuters can use the toll-free 122 emergency number or the FRSC mobile app to lodge complaints.
With the end-of-year travel season in sight, the FRSC’s nationwide Ember Months Campaign demonstrates a proactive stance on road safety. The Corps Marshal’s call for passengers’ active involvement in reporting reckless driving underlines the FRSC’s commitment to creating a safer travel environment for all.
