DAILY COURIER – In an engaging session with the press, Dr. Ugo Young Atakulu, Executive Chairman of the YUVA Group, announced his ambitious plan to launch a skill acquisition project targeting 1,000 Nigerian youth in 2025.
This project, he explained today, aims to equip young Nigerians with practical skills that can provide sustainable livelihoods and reduce dependency amid rising economic challenges.
Addressing questions about the country’s pressing socio-economic issues, Dr. Atakulu highlighted the need for grassroots empowerment. "Skill acquisition is essential," he stated. "Every person who knows a trade—whether it’s hairdressing, tailoring, or mechanics—has the chance to earn a daily living. Skills offer an alternative to the financial struggles many face, and this project will be a direct response to those difficulties."
Dr. Atakulu’s focus on skill acquisition aligns with his broader vision for a self-reliant and economically empowered Nigeria. He emphasized that the project will include training in diverse fields tailored to the realities of Nigeria's job market, from traditional trades to digital skills, helping participants become economically independent.
When asked if Nigeria’s challenges stem from a lack of policies or from issues in execution, Dr. Atakulu pointed to the role of leadership and community engagement. “It’s not just about creating policies,” he said. “It’s about leaders who are willing to be accountable to the people who elected them.” He argued that urban democracy, which emphasizes local governance and citizen engagement, is critical for Nigeria. Under this model, citizens and leaders collaboratively address issues, ensuring transparency and accountability.
"With the youth being the future leaders," Dr. Atakulu continued, "it’s crucial they are equipped with both skills and a mindset of accountability. This is the path to true change." He expressed optimism that his skill acquisition program will contribute to this shift, as the youth not only gain economic tools but also experience the power of community-driven solutions.
Dr. Atakulu also commented on the recent government policy to merge hospitality-related ministries, calling it a positive step toward cohesive management and accountability within the sector. He highlighted that unifying ministries with overlapping duties allows for clearer, streamlined goals and more efficient use of resources. This alignment, he believes, will stimulate growth in tourism and hospitality, opening more employment opportunities for skilled youth.
With his skill acquisition project set to launch in 2025, Dr. Atakulu aims to transform the lives of at least 1,000 youth, creating a ripple effect of economic growth and stability across Nigerian communities. The initiative will not only provide practical training but also encourage young Nigerians to embrace entrepreneurship, innovation, and community support networks.
Dr. Atakulu concluded by calling for collective efforts to support Nigeria’s youth: "True transformation requires everyone’s participation. While we demand accountability from our leaders, we must also take steps ourselves. I am committed to empowering young Nigerians, but building a prosperous Nigeria will require us all."
Through this initiative, Dr. Atakulu hopes to lay a foundation for future generations, showing that skills, coupled with responsibility and resilience, can bridge the gaps left by economic hardships.
