DAILY COURIER - Nigerians and electric ower consumers alike should again brace up for another blackout as the power generating companies ( Gencos), Thursday, raised the alarm that the national grid has collapsed 162 times in the last eleven years.
While making the disclosure in Abuja, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Association of Power Generation Companies (APGC). Dr Joy Ogaji noted that since 2013 to date, the grid has collapsed 162 times"
Ogaji, who stated this at the ongoing Public hearing on incessant grid collapses organised by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has therefore called for a proactive solution to tackle the recurring grid collapses in the country.
She said: " The topic for this course, this morning, is not new at all. From association data taken from 2013 to data, the grid has collapsed 162 times. A proactive solution is key in order to tackle the recurring grid collapses in the country."
While also decrying the menace, the Electricity Distribution Companies, also known as DisCos, described the situation as embarrassing, saying it has dented their reputation.
Malla Umar Sanni Bello, who spoke for the company, stated that the development had given impetus to some of its big customers, like manufacturers threatening to leave the company.
Stakeholders present includes: representatives of the generation companies, distribution companies, and intervenors from the private sector.
In their respective remarks, they restated the need to replace feeble equipment, DisCos to maintain their various distribution networks, and system operators should be equipped with knowledge.
