DAILY COURIER - The Lagos State Government in a bold move towards sustainable energy and infrastructural development, has entered into strategic partnerships with China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) to generate 50 megawatts (MW) of solar power across its tertiary institutions and enhance the state's transport network. The landmark agreements were solidified with the signing of two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), marking a significant leap in the state’s commitment to economic growth and sustainability.
The agreements, which were witnessed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, outline the state's plans to transform its road infrastructure and implement solar power systems across major tertiary institutions, including Lagos State University and its campuses, Lagos State University of Science and Technology, Lagos State University of Education, and Lagos State College of Medicine.
Solar Power Initiative for Tertiary Institutions
One of the key highlights of the partnership is the deployment of solar power systems, expected to generate 50 MW of electricity, to these institutions. This project is designed to provide cleaner, more affordable, and sustainable energy solutions, reducing the dependence on the national grid and improving the learning environment across these institutions.
Speaking on the initiative, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of integrating renewable energy into the state's education sector. “This project demonstrates our commitment to sustainable energy as a key part of our economic development. By providing cleaner electricity to our institutions, we are investing in the future of Lagos State while also addressing the global challenge of climate change,” he said.
The solar power initiative aligns with the state’s broader vision of adopting green energy to power key sectors. With the expectation of generating 50 MW, this project is poised to significantly reduce electricity costs, ensure uninterrupted power supply to the institutions, and enhance the overall academic and research experience for students and faculty members.
Infrastructure Boost: Lekki-Epe Link Bridge
In addition to the solar project, the Lagos State Government also formalized plans to construct the Lekki-Epe Link Bridge. This infrastructure project is a critical part of the state's strategic transport masterplan aimed at easing traffic congestion in the Lekki-Epe axis and improving connectivity across Lagos. The proposed bridge will serve as a crucial link, facilitating smoother traffic flow and creating a seamless commuting experience for residents and businesses in the area.
The Lagos State Government has already held discussions with CCECC about awarding the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract for the Lekki-Epe Link Bridge. Feasibility and design studies have been conducted, setting the groundwork for the commencement of the project.
Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized that good roads and transport infrastructure are essential for the growth of Lagos State, adding, “Our strategic transport masterplan is not just a blueprint; it’s a commitment to improving the lives of all Lagosians. By focusing on key road networks, we aim to reduce traffic congestion and support economic growth.”
Commitment to Sustainable Development
The partnerships with CCECC reflect Lagos State’s dedication to achieving a sustainable and economically vibrant future. With both the solar power project and the Lekki-Epe Link Bridge, the government is making substantial investments in critical infrastructure that will not only support Lagos’ expanding population but also drive innovation in renewable energy and transport.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was present during the signing ceremony, lauded the Lagos State Government’s efforts to integrate sustainability into its developmental agenda. He praised the initiatives as forward-thinking solutions that would position Lagos as a model for other states in the country.
The MoUs represent a step forward in addressing two major challenges facing Lagos—power supply and transport infrastructure. By focusing on clean energy and improved road networks, the state is setting the stage for long-term economic growth and improved quality of life for all Lagosians.
