DAILY COURIER - In a formal ceremony held in Abuja today, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) presented certificates of return to the newly elected governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and his deputy, Hon. Denise Idahosa. The event, which took place at INEC’s headquarters, marked the official confirmation of their victory in the highly contested Edo State gubernatorial election.
Presiding over the ceremony, INEC National Commissioner Prof. Rhoda Gumus, who oversaw the Edo election, expressed satisfaction with the electoral process. She noted that the peaceful conduct of the election and the smooth transition of leadership were indicative of Nigeria’s growing democratic maturity.
Senator Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, was declared the winner of the gubernatorial election held on Saturday, September 21, 2024. He secured a total of 291,667 votes, defeating his closest rival, Dr. Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 247,274 votes. INEC officially declared Okpebholo the winner with a margin of 44,433 votes, cementing his mandate to lead Edo State.
Speaking to journalists after receiving his certificate of return, Okpebholo expressed gratitude to God, the people of Edo State, and his party, the APC. “This victory belongs to the people of Edo, and I pledge to serve with integrity and focus on development that will benefit everyone,” he said. He also assured voters that his administration would prioritize peace, unity, and progress in the state.
Dignitaries at the event included APC National Chairman Dr. Umar Abdullahi Ganduje, former Edo State governor Adams Oshiomhole, and Edo Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu. The ceremony was also attended by a number of APC leaders and chieftains from Edo State, reflecting the party’s overwhelming support for the new administration.
As Edo State looks forward to the swearing-in of its new governor, Senator Okpebholo’s victory signals the beginning of a new era, with high expectations for improved governance and people-centered development in the state.
