DAILY COURIER - The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has made significant strides in enforcing traffic regulations within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, as part of its ongoing special patrol, "Operation Karara." Since the operation commenced on September 2, 2024, a total of 823 drivers have been arrested for traffic light and zebra crossing violations. Additionally, 923 fines were issued, 189 vehicles impounded, and 634 licenses and vehicle documents confiscated.
The special enforcement operation was launched following the directives of the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, who, on September 1, 2024, inaugurated the initiative to address the growing menace of traffic light violations in the nation's capital. These violations have contributed to a significant number of road accidents and traffic congestion, prompting the FRSC to take decisive action.
The goal of "Operation Karara" is to curtail these infractions through swift arrests and prosecution, public education campaigns on road safety, and collaboration with other security agencies to improve traffic management. The Corps Marshal emphasized that traffic light violations are a leading cause of road crashes and stressed that the FRSC would use all legal avenues to bring these offenses to a halt.
In a statement issued on September 13, 2024, the FRSC expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far. The Corps Marshal praised the commanders and field operatives for their dedication and called for intensified efforts, particularly at major intersections and during peak traffic hours, to ensure continued success.
Among the violations for which drivers were charged were traffic light violations, dangerous driving, road marking violations, and reckless driving. The FRSC remains committed to maintaining a safer and more orderly traffic environment in Abuja.
As part of efforts to consolidate on the gains of the operation, the FRSC has appealed to motorists to cooperate with its personnel and adhere strictly to traffic rules and regulations.
The operation is part of a broader strategy to enhance road safety and reduce the incidence of traffic-related accidents in the FCT.
The statement was signed by FRSC Corps Commander Olusegun Ogungbemide, from the FRSC Headquarters in Abuja.
