DAILY COURIER - The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the Federal Government to review its "anti-people" policies that have worsened economic hardship and insecurity in the country. In a statement marking the celebration of Eid-el Maulud on September 15, 2024, the PDP charged the government to prioritize the well-being of citizens and reverse policies that have deepened the suffering of Nigerians.
In its message, signed by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the party celebrated with Nigerians, especially the Muslim faithful, as they commemorate the birth of the Holy Prophet Mohammed (SAW). The PDP emphasized that the occasion offers a unique opportunity for leaders to reflect and realign with the values of compassion and care for the masses, as exemplified by the Prophet’s teachings.
The PDP lamented the current socio-economic conditions under the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration, citing widespread poverty, insecurity, and inflation. "Millions of citizens have been subjected to misery, hopelessness, and utter destitution due to the APC’s bad governance and policies," the statement read.
The party further criticized the Federal Government’s decisions to increase fuel prices, taxes, and tariffs, describing them as "life-discounting" and "suffocating" to the Nigerian people. The PDP called for an immediate reversal of these policies, warning that their effects on ordinary Nigerians have been devastating, preventing many from enjoying significant occasions such as Eid-el Maulud with their families.
In its statement, the PDP urged the government to curb corruption, reduce unnecessary spending, and direct resources toward projects and programs that directly benefit the populace. It also encouraged the Federal Government to adopt a more sensitive approach to policy-making, prioritizing the needs of the people over political interests.
The PDP concluded its message by encouraging Nigerians to remain hopeful, show love to one another, and pray for divine intervention in the nation's affairs. Despite the hardships, the party expressed optimism that the country could achieve a national rebirth.
The PDP’s statement comes at a time of growing public discontent with the economic policies of the current administration, which many citizens and groups have labeled as "anti-people."
Eid-el Maulud, the celebration of the birth of the Prophet Mohammed (SAW), is being observed by Muslims worldwide, offering an opportunity for reflection, prayer, and unity.
