DAILY COURIER – The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), Aare Hon. Tolu Bankole, has lauded Nigerian powerlifter Onyinyechi Mark for her historic gold medal win at the ongoing Paris Paralympics. Mark, 23, secured Nigeria’s first gold medal at the event after lifting 150kg in the women’s up to 61kg category, setting a new world record. Her achievement surpasses the previous world record held by compatriot Lucy Ejike.
In a congratulatory message issued on Wednesday, Hon. Bankole praised Onyinyechi's accomplishment, describing it as a testament to the potential and resilience of Nigerian athletes, particularly within the PWD community. “Onyinyechi's remarkable achievement on the global stage exemplifies the incredible talent and strength of Nigerians. By setting a new world record, she has placed herself among the elite in powerlifting history. We celebrate this victory and the honor she has brought to our great nation,” Bankole stated.
He added that Onyinyechi's win has filled the country with pride, showcasing the results of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Hon. Bankole also emphasized that her feat stands as a beacon of hope, encouraging others in Nigeria’s sports community to strive for excellence.
In addition to celebrating Onyinyechi Mark's victory, Hon. Bankole also extended his congratulations to another Nigerian Paralympian, Esther Nworgu, who recently clinched a silver medal in her event. “Esther’s silver medal win is a source of immense pride for the country. Her perseverance and dedication demonstrate the strength and resilience of Nigerian athletes. We are incredibly proud of her accomplishment,” Bankole said.
As the Paralympic Games continue, Hon. Bankole urged other Nigerian athletes to draw inspiration from Onyinyechi and Esther's successes, encouraging them to continue representing the nation with pride. “You all have the talent and ability to soar to new heights. I encourage you to keep the tempo, remain focused, and give your best as you showcase the greatness of our nation on the global stage. We are rooting for you, and we know that you will make us proud,” he stated.
Hon. Bankole also stressed the importance of sustained support for the Paralympic athletes, recognizing them as true national heroes who inspire millions of Nigerians. He noted that the determination and spirit displayed by these athletes mirror the resilience of the Nigerian people. “Our Paralympians are a source of national pride, and their dedication is a reflection of the strength of Nigeria.
