DAILY COURIER - Rt. Honorable Benjamin Okezie Kalu, Nigeria's Deputy Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, and member representing Bende Federal Constituency of Abia State, has rapidly become a pivotal figure in the nation’s political landscape. With a vibrant and diverse constituency of 100 autonomous communities, Kalu has distinguished himself as a leader committed to the advancement of his people and the broader Nigerian polity.
In collaboration with the Honorable Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Kalu has played an instrumental role in stabilizing the Federal House of Representatives amidst the multi-party dynamics at play. Their partnership has not only ensured legislative coherence, it also fostered a conducive environment for the enactment of policies beneficial to all Nigerians.
Hon. Kalu who was elected in 2019 for the first time to represent Bende Federal Constituency and also re-elected in 2023, has within the shortest space of time achieved some laudable milestones. Most notable is his leadership in rallying support for the South East Development Commission (SEDC). This initiative, recently signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is a monumental step toward the economic and infrastructural revitalization of the South East region. The SEDC aims to address decades of developmental neglect, providing the much-needed framework for sustainable growth and development in the area.
However, Kalu’s rising profile and influence have not come without challenges. As a politician with a strong grassroots connection and a growing influence in both his constituency and across the South East, he has endured a series of vicious attacks. These attacks, often orchestrated by those threatened by his close ties with the presidency and his increasing popularity, have sought to undermine his credibility.
One such instance involved a doctored viral video, which disturbed many of his supporters and well-wishes. True to his character, Kalu, who was on a holiday at the time, reassured his supporters by confirming that the video was indeed manipulated. This further demonstrates a high-level of transparency, resilience and grassroot engagement.
Despite these challenges, Kalu remains a proud ambassador for the youth and a beacon of hope for many. His close relationship with South East governors and his colleagues in the National Assembly further cements his status as a key player in Nigeria's political arena. The brand that is Rt. Honorable Benjamin Okezie Kalu is undeniably on the rise, and those who seek to tarnish his image have met with failure.
