DAILY COURIER — The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has reiterated its commitment to a zero-tolerance policy for extortion during the National Identification Number (NIN) enrollment process.
In a press statement issued on December 20, 2024, by the Head of Corporate Communications, Dr. Kayode Adegoke, the Commission emphasized that NIN enrollment is entirely free of charge.
According to NIMC, neither its staff nor its authorized Front End Partners (FEPs) are permitted to demand payment from applicants for NIN registration. The Commission has taken a firm stance against any violation of this policy, directing security agencies to track down and apprehend those involved in extortion. Offenders will face strict sanctions under the law, and erring FEPs will have their licenses revoked.
To combat the issue, NIMC has encouraged members of the public to report any cases of extortion by staff or FEPs. Reports can be submitted via the following channels: email: customercare@nimc.gov.ng or phone: 07002255646
The Commission assures the public of its commitment to providing seamless enrollment services and has pledged to curb any unethical practices undermining its operations.
“NIMC remains dedicated to ensuring that NIN enrollment services are accessible, free, and transparent for all Nigerians. Any reported act of extortion will be swiftly addressed, and offenders will face the full weight of the law,” Dr. Adegoke stated.
The reaffirmation of the zero-tolerance policy comes amidst growing concerns over reports of irregularities during NIN registration. By reinforcing its stance, the Commission aims to restore public confidence in the enrollment process and uphold its mandate of providing efficient and corruption-free identity management services.
NIMC continues to urge Nigerians to utilize the reporting channels provided to aid its efforts in eliminating extortion and ensuring accountability within its operations.
