DAILY COURIER - Efforts to mitigate traffic gridlock on the Niger bridges connecting Asaba and Onitsha have received a boost with a strategic collaboration between the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigeria Police Force.
This joint initiative according to a statement today by the Corp's Spokesperson, ACM Olusegun Ogungbemide, set to last from December 18, 2024, to January 10, 2025, aims to ensure smooth vehicular movement during the busy festive season.
The partnership followed a crucial meeting between the Anambra State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Joyce Nnennaya Alexander, and key police officials, including Anambra State Police Commissioner CP Nnaghe Obono Itam and Delta State Police Commissioner CO BS Oluwafemi.
The collaboration has outlined several measures to address the persistent traffic challenges along the Old Niger Bridge and the Second Niger Bridge:
Removal of Checkpoints: All police checkpoints on the Old Niger Bridge, particularly on the Delta side, will be dismantled to ease traffic flow.
Mobile Surveillance: Surveillance teams will monitor the Second Niger Bridge corridor to ensure uninterrupted movement.
Joint Traffic Control: Officers from the FRSC and the police will be deployed to manage traffic on both bridges effectively.
Enhanced Enforcement: Adequate deployment of personnel will ensure compliance with traffic regulations and swift response to any disruptions.
Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed praised the Anambra Sector Commander for fostering this partnership. According to him, the synergy between the FRSC and the Nigeria Police underscores a shared commitment to road safety and ease of movement during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
"This collaboration strengthens our resolve to ensure safety and ease of movement for all road users on the Niger bridges during the festive season," the Corps Marshal stated, urging motorists to cooperate fully with traffic management personnel.
The FRSC has appealed to the motoring public to comply with all traffic rules and regulations and support the efforts of traffic personnel in maintaining order. The agency emphasized that the success of the initiative depends on mutual cooperation between road users and law enforcement agencies.
The measures come as part of broader efforts to manage the expected surge in vehicular traffic across Nigeria during the holiday season, ensuring a safer and more convenient travel experience for all.
