DAILY COURIER - The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), in collaboration with Sightsavers, has organized a three-day planning retreat in Karu, Nasarawa State, aimed at advancing the implementation of operational policies, regulations, guidelines, and frameworks.
According to a statement by the head, information and public relations unit,
Mbanefo JohnMichaels, the retreat, which began on November 25, 2024, also focuses on developing seven additional operational policies to strengthen the commission's mandate and impact.
Declaring the retreat open, the Executive Secretary of NCPWD, Chief Ayuba Gufwan, commended development partners for their unwavering support and commitment to the disability rights movement. He urged participants to maximize the opportunity presented by the retreat to refine strategies and ensure effective policy implementation.
“This retreat presents an opportunity to streamline our implementation strategies, ensuring that our policies are effectively translated into action,” Chief Gufwan emphasized.
Chief Gufwan highlighted the significance of the timing of the retreat, coinciding with the end of the moratorium period, a phase that now allows for the full enforcement of disability laws and policies. He described this milestone as a turning point in promoting compliance and ensuring that disability-related regulations are upheld across the country.
While acknowledging the progress made, the Executive Secretary also addressed challenges within the disability rights movement, particularly the absence of robust structures in some advocacy groups, which he noted could undermine their credibility and effectiveness.
However, he expressed optimism about the growing alignment of institutional frameworks with inclusivity and accessibility principles, particularly within the National Assembly, where efforts to modernize structures are gaining momentum.
The retreat provided a platform for stakeholders to assess progress, identify gaps, and develop forward-thinking strategies to promote the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities. Participants included policymakers, advocacy groups, and development partners, who collectively worked on creating actionable plans to enhance the commission's operations.
Key areas of focus included: Strengthening existing policies and frameworks. Developing seven additional operational policies to address emerging needs. Enhancing collaboration with stakeholders to promote inclusivity.
Others are: Refining enforcement mechanisms to ensure compliance with disability laws and commitment to advancing disability rights
The NCPWD reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities through strategic collaborations, effective policy implementation, and robust enforcement. The retreat underscores the commission's dedication to fostering a society where persons with disabilities can thrive and fully participate in all aspects of life.
The event marks another step toward achieving a more inclusive Nigeria, with stakeholders united in their resolve to overcome challenges and drive meaningful change in the lives of persons with disabilities.
