DAILY COURIER - The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has suspended its National Chairman, Mamman Mike Osuman, over what it described as unauthorized and unilateral remarks concerning the 2027 presidential election.
Osuman, during the ACF National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Wednesday, reportedly stated that the North would back a northern candidate for the presidency in 2027. His comments have sparked controversy within the influential northern socio-political group, leading to swift disciplinary action.
In a joint statement issued on Thursday, the Chairman of the ACF Board of Trustees (BOT), Bashir Dalhatu, and the Secretary-General, Murtala Aliyu, distanced the organization from Osuman’s remarks, labeling them as his personal opinions.
“The statements were made by Mr. Mamman Mike Osuman without consulting or discussing with other leaders and members of the ACF. They reflect his personal opinion only,” the statement read.
The Forum rejected Osuman’s comments outright and announced his immediate suspension as National Chairman. ACF also revealed that a committee had been set up to investigate the circumstances surrounding his remarks and any associated infractions.
“For this reason, the leadership of the ACF’s Board of Trustees (BOT) and that of its NEC has decided to place Mamman Mike Osuman on suspension with immediate effect,” the statement further stated.
The suspension of Osuman highlights internal tensions within the ACF as Nigeria’s 2027 presidential race gradually becomes a subject of political discourse. The Forum, known for advocating northern interests, is keen to maintain unity and a collective voice on key national issues, including the presidency.
By swiftly sanctioning Osuman, the ACF leadership appears determined to reaffirm its commitment to consultative decision-making and avoid the impression of factionalism or premature endorsements.
The investigation into Osuman’s comments and conduct is expected to provide clarity on the issue. Meanwhile, ACF members and stakeholders are closely watching how the Forum navigates this internal challenge while managing its role in shaping northern political strategies ahead of the 2027 elections.
The suspension of a sitting chairman is a rare and significant development in the ACF’s history, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the Forum’s resolve to safeguard its integrity.
